GREEN THUMBS

Sporting goods giant Nike is taking measures to enforce water usage guidelines at factories in its global textile supply chain. The company has introduced a traffic light system to monitor how well each its suppliers are performing, but vowed to help those factories tipping the scales. John Frazier, head of Nike's restricted substances list and green chemistry program said: "Water is becoming more and more of an issue, and an accelerated issue. We have a lot of conversations about CO2 and global warming, which are both appropriate, but we also need to start having conversations about water, especially in the apparel industry." Speaking at a conference organised by ethical textiles group RITE, Frazier noted that 1.1bn people across the globe have no access to drinking water, with 2.6bn without access to proper sanitation. He pointed out that parts of Asia and Northern Africa -major textile producing regions -were already suffering from water scarcity. Including the complete production cycle, Frazier admitted that when you consider it takes 2,650 litres of water for a single T-shirt and around 10,000 litres for a pair of jeans, that the "numbers are gigantic". Nike has estimated that the apparel industry uses around 40bn gallons of water per year in the production chain, and Nike's programme is looking to address this by regulating water usage at 400 of its suppliers, and assessing their levels by way of its traffic light system."If we rate them as red, they have to do something to improve. Our role is not to walk away from them," Fazier said. "Because if we walk away they're not going to improve. We will give them timelines and we'll check that there's been progress towards these goals but our intention is to improve them rather than walk away. Having said this, we have had to walk away from some because they just wouldn't do anything. "This year's RITE Group Conference in was held in Westminster, London.

Nike launches sustainable product push
October 29, 2008

Sportswear giant Nike has launched a sustainability drive, rolling out its "Considered Design" concept to all six of the company's key product categories. The aim of the initiative is to create innovative products that minimise environmental impact by reducing waste in their design and development, as well as using environmentally preferred materials and eliminating toxics. Nike Considered products have been offered for several years, but now the US company is rolling out the full Considered Design concept across all six of its key product categories: basketball, running, soccer, women's training, men's training and sportswear, as well as tennis and ACG (all condition gear). "As we look at how we design and develop products and run our global business, it's not enough to be solving the challenges of today," said Nike CEO Mark Parker. "We are designing for the sustainable economy of tomorrow, and for us that means using fewer resources, more sustainable materials and renewable energy to produce new products. "Nike is aiming for 100% of its footwear to meet Considered standards by 2011, all apparel by 2015 and all equipment by 2020. That would achieve a 17% waste reduction in the company's supply chain, plus a 20% increase in the use of environmentally preferred materials.

GUAP-WORK ORANGE

I have arrived...
As you can see I have developed a new method to shake off jet lag. I really did though, stay up as late as you can then wake up as early as you can then MAGIC TIME!!! You will feel like a million bucks. Something like that...

My first day had been quite adventures. Stockholm is a really nice city, BEAUTIFUL. I'm staying in a area called Drejagatan. Kinda like the Gramercy(NYC) of Stockholm. The view is amazing due to its location is right off a river. We'll get back to that later though.

As I got here, slept, ate, then went to the Nike showroom. Shouts to everybody at A.W.B. SUPER NICE!!!

THANKS FOR THE GOODS!!!

Swedish artist(?) sorry my notes are in my bag.

Here are some holiday goodies from Nike (I) these should be coming out during holiday season. Nice play on last year rerelease of the Nike 91'Structure Triax
I kinda like these blazers. They remind me of Pendleton's new line at Opening Ceremony. (Side Note: Pendleton JP may be my new favorite line for 2008 especially Fall. It's ridiculous) If you haven't visited Opening Ceremony recently they are doing something really special. Opening Ceremony has transformed into a rather cool concept store, NY vs Japan. So now O.P. carries a wide array of Japanese brands like my lover Comme des Garcon "PLAY", GRN(WOW!!!), Pendleton JAPAN to name a few. Don't buy the Montana jacket from Pendleton because I'm getting it when I get back.

Definitely learning tons about the international market. I have showroom meetings and tons of other stuff to feel you in on. Definitely will be showcasing some of the best of Scandinivan fashion and those individual who are making the mark.
This is Fredrik...
Super nice guy and also a sales & PR rep at A.W.B.(I will explain A.W.B. later during press days here)

Fredrik also has a clothing brand called UNIFORMS FOR THE DEDICATED. (Side note: U.F.T.D crew really into the arts peep the website, rather nice!!) U.F.T.D is a concept driven brand in there 2nd season of production. There debut season was held to high acclaim as they took home the covenanted "Rookie of the Year" award at the Swedish Fashion Council annual review.

First thing I notice about scandinavian brands was there attention to tailoring and craftmenship. Definitely on another level. Young brands even produce at rates that most USA brands could take up to 5 years to get to. Even in U.T.F.D. case, they were unable to produce locally due to they had outgrown the production market. Meaning sizeable amount of SKUs again this is only there 2nd season in production. Look at U.F.T.D's wax canvas jacket; purple tartan inside lining(also quilt stitch),duffle accents, back 4 inch ykk zip for movement and ladies & gentlemen the fit is like bbq on a hot summer day. I also like this white button up. Looks almost sailor/navy(3.1-ish) inspired shirt.

I love detailing maybe thats why I hold Wood Wood so high in regards. U.F.T.D. follow suit taking regular pieces and making them there own. I like the button contrast alot!! Their graphic program is not half bad either. Small but it complements the cut&sew very well.

U.F.T.D has has another line, TEAM MANWHORE geared more towards the core snowboarding industry. Focused graphic program with some nice cut&sew too.

I have tons more to share as this weekend I did a lot. I have to run but hopefully be back later today to share the rest.
Oh yea shouts to Vice Sweden/Stockholm camp. I don't want to misspell your name(Maltildas?) but I had a super nice time. Appreciate the drinks and hospitality.. Maltildas(?) put me on to a new music site that is so awesome, Spotify. It's pretty dope like imeem to a new level. Check it out but it's beta so you need a invite to fully play. I might get a few for JDS/SAS trivia question prize later this week.

On the Feet..

Well on my desk.

Today, I came into to work to see we received the Nike “Octagon Quilted” Dunk Highs aka Olympic Pack.
Visual stimulating but I may be a bit too old to rock these.
They have this buggy glitter patent leather shimmer I'm not too fond of.
Though I did grabbed all 3 dunk highs for the road.
I like the perforated leather inside and the embossed sole is a nice touch.

You can grab a pair at BoundlessNY later today...

J.D.S. ldols

Old school Nike commercial featuring Lil Penny, Anfernee Hardaway, and Nick "Miss-3-free throws in playoffs" Anderson....

When I was a kid I used to be obsessed with Ken Griffey Jr.
The baseball cards(rookie card from Upper Deck), paraphernalia, and personally, the closest resemblance to that sweet swing.(J/K) I was a huge MJ fan and don't let me get started with "Penny" Hardaway(not Anfernee but Penny, big difference). No matter how much love I have for basketball, I will always be one of those fans rooting for "The Kid". One of the best outfielders of my time and maybe one of best swings ever(Mesmerizing...come on, who didn't try to jock his stance in the box)...

10 golden gloves for outfielding, AL MVP, All-Star MVP, 2582 hits, 597 home runs, and 1174 RBI's
On the field, his defense was tenacious, offense was like non-other and off the field he was simply a class act.
Thanks for being a great role model!!!

NikeIDeas

Nike has always had some of the best commercials.
One of my all-time favorite commercials from Oregon via Japan.

Famed japanese advertising director, Takeo Hatai, filmed this Nike Cosplay campaign x Power Rangers spoof in Akiba, a major electronics city in Japan.

I heard the power ranger costumes were auctioned for $10,000 a piece and the shoes $2500 via 2 japanese websites.
True??

Either way, marketing at its finest...
